Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg in 1833. His father, who was a jeweller, was unable to support him financially so he had to seek work as a baker. He had no interest in the violin, however after studying the piano and becoming a pupil of Ignaz Moscheles he decided to pursue a career as a composer. These are the four piano sonatas which he composed in a short period of time during 1858:

Although he composed a great deal of music for orchestra and chamber ensemble he is best known as a pianist. He composed many piano pieces as well as some early "tone poems" and "string trios".
