No computers were harmed in the making of this beautiful beast, and the finished code is in a nice little DVD v2.0 format. (Unsurprisingly, the resulting file size is only 28MB under 'Mp4'). Quality-wise, it matches the standard Blu Ray definition, which is a lot of 'chunky' detail - the black levels don't really go out of their way to make things look scary (when they should), and the edge of the frame doesn't flicker or reflect tone changes - it just looks filmic. The video is perfectly smooth, and at times there was even a slight helping of edge-enhancing, and the subtitles worked fine. The audio is very good (and again, matches up with a Blu Ray), with a good pitch and percussive VFX. The sound was clear, and if you weren't a Relaxing Whisky drinker, you probably won't hear anything wrong with it. But hey, it's for a movie.
While the Blu Ray is a high-quality product, it's going to take a while to establish itself in the market - if you've ever tried going to watch a film and then remembered that everyone can see it, if you've ever watched the'mainstream' television you'll realise that people just - don't seem to pay that much attention to things. This may have an adverse effect - seeing as the fifth of us still don't have 4K TVs, still don't have reliable broadband and still don't have any reliable box launches, it may take a while for people to embrace the 'wand' as a more convenient way to view films.
With some more convincing efforts, this could still make a super hit, but it will have to work on all those fronts. But then, it's not supposed to be about the film - it's about us and the industry, and it looks like we're working to the idea of being Hollywood's cheapest option again. d2c66b5586
